What is Home Hemodialysis?

Home hemodialysis allows patients with end-stage kidney disease to perform their dialysis treatments at home rather than travelling to a hospital or dialysis centre three times a week. Using compact, modern dialysis machines, trained patients or their care partners can carry out treatments on a flexible schedule that suits their lifestyle.

Dr. Bhatt's Home HD programme provides comprehensive training, equipment, and round-the-clock medical supervision to ensure that home treatments are as safe and effective as in-centre dialysis — often with better clinical outcomes due to more frequent and gentler treatments.

Benefits of Home Hemodialysis

More freedom, better outcomes, and a higher quality of life for dialysis patients

Dialyse on Your Schedule

No more fixed hospital slots. Choose treatment times that work around your work, family, and sleep. Many patients prefer nocturnal home HD while they sleep.

Better Clinical Outcomes

More frequent, shorter sessions reduce fluid overload, improve blood pressure control, lower phosphorus levels, and lead to better overall survival rates compared to conventional thrice-weekly in-centre dialysis.

Fewer Dietary Restrictions

With more frequent treatments, patients can enjoy a more liberal diet with fewer restrictions on potassium, phosphorus, and fluid intake — improving quality of life significantly.

Significant Cost Savings

Eliminate travel costs and reduce time away from work. Once trained, your ongoing treatment costs can be substantially lower than in-centre dialysis over time.

More Energy & Vitality

Gentler, frequent dialysis sessions mean less post-treatment fatigue. Patients report feeling more energetic and being able to maintain normal daily activities and employment.

Family Involvement

Care partners are trained alongside patients, creating a supportive home treatment environment. Families feel empowered and more connected to the care process.

How It Works

A structured four-step pathway from assessment to independent home treatment

1

Assessment

Dr. Bhatt evaluates your medical suitability, home environment, and identifies a care partner. A comprehensive medical and psychosocial assessment ensures you are a good candidate for home HD.

2

Training

You and your care partner undergo 4-6 weeks of hands-on training at a RENACARE centre. You learn machine operation, needle cannulation, troubleshooting alarms, infection control, and emergency protocols.

3

Home Setup

Our technical team installs the dialysis machine and water treatment system at your home. We verify plumbing, electrical connections, and water quality before clearing you for independent treatment.

4

Ongoing Support

Monthly lab reviews with Dr. Bhatt, weekly teleconsultation check-ins, 24/7 emergency helpline, quarterly home visits, and remote monitoring of your treatment parameters.

Eligibility Criteria

Not every dialysis patient is suited for home HD. Dr. Bhatt carefully evaluates each candidate to ensure safety and success.

Good Candidates

  • Stable on haemodialysis for at least 3 months
  • Motivated patient willing to learn self-cannulation
  • Reliable care partner available during treatments
  • Adequate home space with proper plumbing and electrical supply
  • Good vascular access (AV fistula or graft preferred)
  • Adequate vision and dexterity for machine operation

May Not Be Suitable

  • Severe cardiac instability or frequent hospitalizations
  • Active untreated psychiatric illness affecting compliance
  • Inadequate home infrastructure (water or power issues)
  • No available care partner for assisted treatments
  • Recurrent vascular access failures

Final eligibility is determined by Dr. Bhatt after a thorough in-person evaluation.

Patient Stories

Hear from patients who transitioned from in-centre dialysis to the freedom of home HD

Switching to home hemodialysis was the best decision I ever made. I do my dialysis five nights a week while I sleep, and during the day I run my business as usual. My phosphorus levels are better, I have stopped three medications, and I feel more like myself than I have in years.

Suresh Verma

Home HD patient since 2024 | Greater Noida

My husband was travelling one hour each way for dialysis three times a week. It was exhausting for both of us. After Dr. Bhatt trained us for home HD, our lives changed completely. I was nervous at first about being his care partner, but the training was thorough and the support team is always just a phone call away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our Home Hemodialysis Program

Is home hemodialysis safe?

Yes, when performed by trained patients with proper equipment and medical oversight, home hemodialysis is as safe as in-centre dialysis. Multiple international studies have demonstrated equivalent or better safety profiles. Our programme includes 4-6 weeks of rigorous training, 24/7 emergency support, and regular clinical reviews with Dr. Bhatt.

How long does the training take?

Training typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions at a RENACARE dialysis centre. Both the patient and their care partner are trained together. The programme covers machine operation, self-cannulation, emergency protocols, infection control, and troubleshooting common alarms. You graduate only when the clinical team is confident in your competence.

What if there is a problem during treatment at home?

Our 24/7 emergency helpline is staffed by experienced nephrology nurses. The dialysis machine also has built-in safety systems that automatically stop treatment and alarm if it detects air in the blood circuit, blood leaks, or pressure abnormalities. In an emergency, we coordinate immediate hospital transfer if required.

What does home hemodialysis cost compared to in-centre dialysis?

After the initial setup investment, monthly costs for home HD are generally comparable to or lower than in-centre dialysis, especially when you factor in eliminated travel costs and reduced time away from work. Many insurance plans cover home hemodialysis. Dr. Bhatt's team will provide a detailed cost breakdown during your assessment.

Do I need to modify my home?

Minor modifications are usually needed: a dedicated electrical outlet, appropriate drainage for the RO system, and adequate water supply. Our technical team evaluates your home before setup and handles all installations. Most homes in Delhi NCR require only minimal changes.

Can I travel while on home hemodialysis?

Yes. For short trips, you can adjust your schedule to dialyse before and after travel. For longer trips, we can arrange guest dialysis at RENACARE centres or partner facilities. Many home HD patients find they have more travel flexibility than those on fixed in-centre schedules.
